Southern Long Island Regional Surge Climatology

Seasonal surge event graphs show the number of events in which surge exceeded the 99th and 99.9th percentile hourly surge for more than one hour. A regional surge event occurs when the surge exceeds the indicated percentile at either The Battery, Willets Point, Montauk or Sandy Hook. A similar climatology for the northern shore of Long Island could not be constructed due to the lack of records of sufficient length. The identification of storm surge events is described in DeGaetano (2007).
