Historical and Analogue Storm Tracks and Surges

Information on the impacts associated with past East coast winter storms can be accessed in two ways. First selecting a historical storm date and tide gauge location, will produce a map of the storm track and corresponding sea level pressures associated with the selected storm. A plot of storm surge associated with the storm will also be produced. This list of historical storms has been assembled from a variety of sources including the National Weather Service, U.S. Geological Survey and emergency management agencies on Long Island.

When an East Coast winter storm is imminent, selecting the "Find Analogue for current storm" link will match the forecasted storm track and sea level pressure values of the imminent storm with all storms in the historical database and return graphs of the track and storm surges associated with the most closely matched historical storms.
